Opinion poll: Romanians believe terrorism and immigration are the main problems EU is facing

Immigration and terrorism are the main issues EU is facing, Romanian citizens believe, ahead of the economic situation and the level of crime, the latest Eurobarometer data show, published by the European Commission in July.

More than 31,000 people in 34 countries and regions in Europe have been interviewed by the Eurobarometer in the spring of 2016.

The survey was conducted during May 21-31, 2016.

About 48% of the interviewees declared that immigration is one of the most important issues the EU is facing at the moment, down by 10% as compared to a similar survey in the fall of 2015.

Immigration has been indicated as the most important issue for the EU 20 Member States, the highest shares being recorded in Estonia (73%), Denmark (71%) the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Hungary (67% each).

In Romania, 42% of respondents said that immigration is the most important issue the European Union is facing.

Terrorism is the second biggest source of concern for the EU citizens, being indicated as a very important issue the EU is facing by 39% of respondents, up by 14% against the previous survey, which was conducted at the time of attacks Paris in November last year.

The highest rates of concern were recorded in Ireland and Cyprus (50% each), Romania (49%), Croatia (48%) and Luxembourg (47%).

Nationwide, Romanians remain concerned about the state of the health system and social assistance (37%), unemployment (25%) and inflation (24%).

In Romania, 42% of respondents indicated a positive view on the EU, down by 15% against the previous survey, while 14% said they had a negative perception, up by 5%.
