Over 10,000 Romanians Celebrate Leap Day Birthdays Every 4 Years

According to Statistics data, 10,562 Romanians are born on February 29, a day that appears in calendars once every 4 years. There are approximately 5 million people born on February 29 in the world, and the odds of being born on February 29 are 1 in 1,461.
The most common explanation is that we have these years to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. Although we learned in school that it takes the Earth 365 days to revolve around the Sun, the actual rotation takes about 365.25 days. Adding an extra day every four years keeps the balance.
Without leap years, in 100 years “summer would be in November or December,” explains Robert C. Washington III, a graduate scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
