Bucharest Court granted the anti-corruption department’s request to arrest Pitesti Mayor Tudor Pendiuc for 30 days. Pendiuc, prosecuted for corruption, is currently under house arrest. Bucharest court’s ruling can be challenged.
Prosecutors have requested that Pendiuc house arrest sentence should be replaced by preventive arrest for 30 days, arguing the mayor has broken the obligation not to get in touch with the other defendants in the file. Prosecutors are claiming Pendiuc has spoken on the phone with his counselor Elena Carmen Lis several times by some go-between persons. Lis is suspect in Pendiuc case.
Pitesti mayor is charged with bribery and abuse of office in a file related to a joint venture contract which would have caused a EUR 5 million damage to Pitesti city hall’s budget.
