Protest in Victoriei Square, five years after the Diaspora rally

5 years are marked today since the Diaspora rally in Victoriei Square, with a new protest being scheduled at the scene of protests. Now justice is demanded for the victims of the abuses by the gendarmes on August 10, 2018.

According to a press release from the Declic Community, one of the initiators of this evening’s protest, from 19:00, the expertise carried out by the Military Technical Academy within the Defense Ministry (MApN) shows that grenades, used at close range, become extremely dangerous.

“The August 10 file was sent to court! Law enforcement acted brutally, using dangerous grenades and other means of repression against peaceful demonstrators. We thank Declic members for supporting the costs of lawyers in the file. Thanks to them, today the evidence is on a judge’s table (…) We ask for speedy judgment, before the facts expire. The 10 August investigation confirmed what the participants in the protest said. They were attacked by gendarmes with war ammunition.

The aggressors would not have been sent to court if Ioan Crăciuneanu, victim injured with a grenade in his leg, had not fought for the reopening of the investigation, supported by his sister, lawyer Lucia Crăciuneanu, and the Declic Community lawyer, Toni Decean. And even if an impartial and objective judge, Ciprian Ghiță from the Bucharest Court of Appeal, had not ordered the resumption of the investigations and had not indicated what evidence the prosecutors must administer. What do we do next? Let’s not forget #August 10, 2018. See you on Thursday, from 7:00 p.m., in Victoriei Square,” says a Declic Facebook post.

More than 300 participants in the protest five years ago are demanding moral and material damages in this case. Another protest will take place between 10.00 and 18.30, also in Victoriei Square, in front of the Government building.

The Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice announced on Tuesday, August 8, that 16 people were sent to court for the facts of August 10, 2018, after 5 years in which the case was passed between the courts.
