The Ministry of Education announced on Thursday evening that Romania has secured the first place at the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics, with a total score of 1,963 out of 2,400 possible points. From October 29th to November 3rd, the 30th edition of the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics is taking place in Maribor, Slovenia.
“The Romanian National Team has dominated the competition, placing first in the individual rankings as well as in team rankings, both in terms of medals and cumulative points. Among the four Romanian competitors, Mihnea Andreescu stands out as the winner of the competition with a perfect score. His performance is a crowning achievement in his informatics olympiad career, as Mihnea has become a university student this year and is set to continue his involvement as a coach and a member of Romania’s national team selection,” the Ministry of Education stated.
Furthermore, according to the ministry, Mihai-Valeriu Voicu has also achieved a remarkable performance. He went from winning a gold medal last year at Dorohoi in the Junior Balkan Olympiad to earning a gold medal and second place in the senior category this year.
Romania’s results were achieved by:
Gold Medal: Mihnea Andreescu – graduate of the International Computer Science High School in Bucharest (1st place with a perfect score)
Gold Medal: Mihai-Valeriu Voicu – student at the International Computer Science High School in Bucharest (2nd place)
Silver Medal: Luca-Mihai Ilie – student at the International Computer Science High School in Bucharest
Bronze Medal: Vlad-Alexandru Haivas – Student at the “Tudor Vianu” National College of Computer Science in Bucharest.
The Romanian team was accompanied to Maribor by Prof. Adrian Panaete, Vice President of the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics (SEPI) and a teacher at “A. T. Laurian” National College in Botosani, serving as the Team Leader, and Adrian Budău, Co-Chair of the “Infoarena” Society and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics, in the capacity of Deputy Leader.
At the Maribor Balkan Olympiad, Romania was also represented in the Scientific Committee by two other SEPI members – Prof. Ionel-Vasile Piţ-Rada from “Traian” National College in Drobeta-Turnu-Severin and doctoral candidate Tamio-Vesa Nakajima from the University of Oxford.
