Romanian High School Students Join European Statistics Olympiad

Starting this fall, the “European Statistics Competition in Romania 2024-2025” is being organized. Romania’s participation in this international competition is a first for our country; the organization of this initiative by the European Commission (Eurostat) is in its eighth edition.

The European Statistics Competition in Romania 2024-2025 is aimed at high school students and is organized by the National Institute of Statistics in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Statistics is present in many fields, in medicine, in the economy, in insurance, in I don’t think there is a field where we can’t talk about statistical data, so this Olympics is welcome, said Elisabeta Ana Naghi at the dedicated press conference, inspector for Education from the Ministry of Education.

The competition is addressed to two categories of students from secondary education: students from the 9th and 10th grades of the national education system (Junior Category) and students from the 11th and 12th grades of the national education system ( Senior category).

Two rounds of national tests will be organized between January and March 2025, followed by the European stage, which will take place between April and May/June 2025. The tests will take place on a dedicated web platform, without requiring physical presence at any stage .

Teams of 2-3 secondary school students (from any profile) will enter the competition. Team members must be from the same secondary school. For each team, a teacher will act as a “tutor”, supervising their work. There is no limit to the number of participants or teams from the same secondary school, nor to the number of teams supervised by a coordinating teacher. A student can be part of only one team.

The language of the national competition will be Romanian, while the European competition will be held in English.

The National Statistics Olympiad calendar begins with the team registration period: October 30 – December 20, 2024. First testing period: 20 January 7 February 2025.

Publication and communication of the results of the first test: 24 February 2025. 2nd testing period: March 3 – March 21, 2025. The publication and communication of the results of the 2nd test will be on April 7, 2025.

The subjects for the two tests will be made by experts from the Ministry of Education and the National Institute of Statistics, explained Ana Maria Ranta, from the National Institute of Statistics. Only the teams that qualify after the first test will go to the 2nd stage.

The teachers coordinating the winning students will be awarded with equivalent gift products worth 400 euros. The first prize will be in products worth 300 euros per student, the second prize: products worth 200 euros/student and the third prize: products worth 100 euros/student.

The teams declared winners of the National Olympiad in each category (senior and junior) will have to make a video in which they refer to official statistics to support their message on a certain theme. The maximum duration of the video will be 2 min and 10 s, of which a maximum of 2 min for the content and 10 seconds for mentioning the sources.
