Romanian Shepherd of Bukovina internationally approved, one puppy may cost EUR 3,000

Shepherd dogs of Bukovina have participated in an exhibition, for the first time in official capacity. The breed was recognized internationally at the end of April. The event was celebrated in Suceava County (north-eastern Romania), the place of origin of both the dogs and the breeders who obtained the homologation of the breed. A shepherd of Bucovina may cost up to EUR 3,000.

They are big dogs, easy to foster, have the hair as long as the Carpathian Shepherd but shorter than the Mioritic Shepherd, digi24.ro reports.

Florin Petrusca, a Romanian breeder from Bukovina: It is a dog that loves children, is a docile dog, it is a beautiful dog. We, here in the mountain area, use it to guard the sheep and cattle.

Alexandru Lehovolea, breeder: I went to a sheepfold and I loved them so much so I took a dog, I was 12 years old and then I fell in love with the Romanian Shepherd of Bukovina.

The history of the Romanian Shepherd of Bukovina has, say locals, a few centuries. It was only three decades ago that work begun for the breed to be internationally recognized.

Dr. Constantin Gaşpar, president of the Bukovina National Club: At the first exhibition in 1984, there were people with bats, with chains, we brought them by buses to the exhibitions.

On April 29, 2019, the Shepherd of Bukovina was recognized as breed at the General Assembly of the Shanghai Committee. At national level, more than 6,000 dogs have been included in the home book over the years. Now, there are only 300 females and 206 males with breeding rights.
