Royal Clipper, one of the most luxurious sailing ships, is coming to Constanta Port on Saturday with almost 150 tourists aboard, mostly Americans.
Royal Clipper, a steel-hulled five-masted fully rigged tall ship used as a cruise ship, is arriving for the first time in Constanta Port on the Romanian Black Sea shore, coming from the Bulgarian port of Burgas and landing at 11 a.m. with 147 tourists aboard.
Royal Clipper will leave Constanta also on the same time at 11 p.m. to head to Varna Bulgarian port. The visiting programme of the tourist aboard includes, at random, sightseeing in Constanta city and county, attending the Seashells Festival in Ovidiu Square downtown Constanta or visiting museums within the Museum Night event.
The sailing ship also booked an arrival in Constanta Port in June.
The ship has a capacity of 227 passengers, a crew of 106 people and equipped with 114 state rooms.
The ship was designed by Polish naval architect Zygmunt Choren for Star Clippers Ltd. of Sweden, and built using an existing steel hull that was modified by the Gdansk Shipyard. She was eventually sold because of financial problems. The Merwede shipyard completed the ship’s interior in 2000, when it was launched in the presence of Silvia, the Queen of Sweden. The renovations included frescography murals by Rainer Maria Latzke completing the ship’s Mediterranean interior.
Her design was based on Preussen, the famous German five-mast Flying P-Liner windjammer built in 1902.
Star Clippers claims that she is the largest “true sailing ship” built since Preussen. She is listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest square-rigged ship in service, with 5,202 square metres of sail. Her sails can be handled with a crew as small as twenty using powered controls. It has 42 sails and a length of 135 metres.
