US President Donald Trump has described Russia’s attack on the city of Sumy on Sunday, which killed at least 34 people, as “terrible”, but said he had been told “they made a mistake”, without specifying who had told him, according to the Kyiv Independent and the BBC.
“I think it was terrible, and I was told they made a mistake, but I think it’s a horrible thing. I think the whole war is a horrible thing (…) for this war to have started is an abuse of power. This country would never have allowed this war to start if I were president. That war is a disgrace”, Trump said aboard Air Force One, when asked about the Russian attack.
When reporters pressed him on whether he believed the tragedy was unintentional, Trump demanded that the Russians be questioned. “They made a mistake. Ask them,” said the US president, who insisted that “it’s Biden’s war.”
“This is Biden’s war. It’s not my war. I’ve been here a very short time. This is a war that was under Biden’s leadership. He gave them billions and billions of dollars. He shouldn’t have allowed it to start if he had any brains, which he didn’t and doesn’t have and it turns out he did,” Trump said. He also reiterated his desire to stop the war. “I’m just trying to stop it so we can save a lot of lives. It happens to be Ukrainian lives and Russian lives, but all I want to do is stop it,” Trump said.
Zelensky asks Trump to visit Ukraine: “You will understand what Putin did”
The leader in Kiev asked Donald Trump to visit Ukraine to see the disaster caused by Russian aggression. He made the statements in an interview broadcast on Sunday by the American television channel CBS, an interview recorded before the Russian attack that killed at least 34 people in Sumy on Sunday.
“We want you to come and see. You think you understand what is happening here. Very well, we respect your decision. But please, before making any decision, before any form of negotiation, come and see the people, civilians, combatants, hospitals, churches, children, destroyed or dead. Come and see, and then let’s move forward with a plan to end the war. You will understand what Putin did,” Zelensky said, addressing Trump.
