A Romanian worker died in Spain, following a powerful explosion, at a biodiesel plant in Calahorra, La Rioja. The blast took place in one of four oil tanks.
The blast took place around 12:55 local time and the area was evacuated with the help of a security perimeter set at a distance of one kilometer from the explosion.
About 250 students from Zaragoza, who were on a day trip to visit the nearby Tierra Rapaz Nature Park, were among those evacuated.
Firefighters from Calahorra and Logrono were on the scene with police from the Civil Guard. Firefighters fought to prevent the blaze from spreading to other containers in the area.
The two dead were workers from a company other than the biodiesel plant. According to El Pais, they were 30 and 41 years old, respectively. Firefighters are working to control and extinguish the fire, a task that can take several days.
