The restrictions during the Covid 19 pandemic have seemed to lead to a significant rise in the number of pregnant women in Romania, with projections pointing to a real “baby boom” in our country in the upcoming months. The number of newborns might get past 200,000 this year, with a peak of deliveries during July-August 2021.
In March 2021, the number of newborns was higher by 1,749 compared to the same month last year, while perspectives revealing a true baby boom in the upcoming months.
According to the latest data released by the National Institute of Statistics, 13,606 children were reportedly born in March 2021, by 1.790 less than in February 2021.
Doctors say that we witness an increasing trend, prompted by the special pandemic conditions, with people staying more indoors and working from home, which made them more concerned about married life and starting a family. Experts argue that for the couples who weren’t decided about having babies yet, the pandemic was a true incentive and the desire to have a baby defeated all challenges generated by the coronavirus crisis.
The INS statistics show that the negative natural growth rate has increased in March 2021 as against March 2020 (minus 16,293 in March 2021 compared to minus 10,734 people in March 2020).
However, 2020 was the year with the least births since 1967, with 161,320 newborns reported, so, by over 40,000 less than in 2019.
According to estimations, the newborn number might get beyond 200,000 this year, with a peak of births during July-August.
Statistics provided by a medical clinic, most pregnant women during this period are from the urban environment and are aged 25 to 39, with most of them expecting their first child.
