‘Colectiv’ fire effects: Fire, explosion and quake risks checked across institutions, particularly schools

Joint teams of the Inspectorate for the Emergency Situations and of the State Inspectorate for Constructions will assess all school units in the country, while checking up the explosion, earthquake and fire risks. The action has been announced by interim PM Sorin Cimpeanu on Tuesday, amidst public debates that most of the public institutions in Romania, particularly schools are lacking fire authorizations.

“These things must be solved as soon as possible (…) In the first stage, we’ll assess all regulations, as we have all kind of regulations which are not always coherent. At the same time, joint teams from the Inspectorate for the Emergency Situations and of the State Inspectorate for Constructions will check if there are other factors involved in this process, they will draft a risk analysis regarding the fire, explosion and earthquake risk,” Cimpeanu said on Tuesday.

He admitted there are a lot of institutions which are not legally operating and that a temporary solution will be found, namely those institutions will be granted a provisional authorization until they get a full permit.

In the context of ‘Colectiv’ nightclub lacking this permit at the time the deadly fire outburst, interim PM Cimpeanu admitted on Saturday that only seven percent of Romania’s 19,000 schools have fire prevention authorizations.

“Out of the 19,000 schools in Romania, just seven percent have authorizations (…) on fire prevention — exactly 1,295 schools,” the minister said.
