Ex-District 4 mayor Piedone’s candidature challenged in court

The members of the “Colectiv for the Future” association filed an appeal in court against the candidature of Cristian Popescu Piedone, who wants to run for a new term at the helm of the District 4 city hall in Bucharest.

The appeal request can be adjusted and enlarged with the suffering and prejudices suffered by each of you due to the mayor activity of the one who doesn’t hesitate to reconfirm, by his candidature, that our close ones have died for nothing,” the association states on Facebook.

At the same time, the District 4 city hall filed a complaint at the National Anti-corruption Directorate asking the former mayor Piedone to pay compensations for causing the city hall image prejudices. The district hall asks Piedone RON 100 M for repaying his guilt of having signed the construction authoritization for the Colectiv nightclub although the venue was not complying with the safefty norms.

Cristian Popescu Piedone on Wednesday informed on Facebook that he had filed his candidature to run for the District 4 Bucharest City Hall, although he had announced that he stepped aside following the Colectiv tragedy. He is criminally prosecuted in this case.

I have been thinking a lot in the past months of who I am and how can I repair my human honor (…) You can decide if I still deserve to take care of the District 4. After all, it’s the constitutional right of any citizen to go to the polls. You don’t need to take to the streets to decide who deserves to be mayor. It’s enough for you to vote,” Piedone added.

The District 4 mayor Cristian Popescu Piedone, who was asked to step aside following the Colectiv tragedy, resigned on November 4. Back then, Piedone used to say that he is going to withdraw from the political life. He also said he is assuming the moral guilt for the Colectiv tragedy, while he will let the magistrates decide about the criminal guilt.
