The authorities announced a seventh victims of the recent floods has been confirmed. “Following the manifestation of the hydrometeorological phenomena manifested in the previous days, in the local area. The railway connecting Galati and Bârlad, operated by a private company, was destroyed by the floods that affected the region over the weekend. Fixing the huge problems caused by the flood will take a long time, and people who depended on trains on this route will have to find other means of transport.
The mayor of Slobozia Conachi commune, Emil Dragomir, said that 76% of the houses were damaged, an estimated 720 homes, people were left with only the clothes on them and their life’s work was gone.
New red code alerts
Hydrologists warn that there is a major risk of floods on rivers in Moldova, so that, starting Monday evening, a Red Code will be in force for the counties of Vaslui, Iasi and Galati. Other watercourses are under Code Orange and Code Yellow warnings.
Hydrologists from the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) have updated the hydrological codes for rivers in Moldova, where it is possible to exceed the defense quotas.
“Thus, the Red Code is established, starting from tonight, from 18:00, until Tuesday, at 12:00, on the rivers in the hydrographic basins: Bârlad – left tributaries related to the downstream sector hydrometric station Vaslui – upstream hydrometric station Bârlad (counties: Vaslui and Iași) and Prut – the tributaries related to the downstream sector of the hydrometric station Drânceni (counties: Vaslui and Galati)”, INHGA announced.
Also, starting from Monday, from 12:00, until Tuesday, at 18:00, an Orange Code is in force on certain sections of rivers in the counties: Vaslui, Iaşi, Galati and Botoşani, in the hydrographic basins: Bârlad, Siret, Prut and Jijia. At the same time, the Yellow Code is in force, starting from Monday, from 12:00, until Tuesday, at midnight. It will affect certain river sectors in the river basins: Bârlad, Prut, Siret and Jijia, in the counties: Neamţ, Iaşi, Vaslui, Bacău, Galati, Vrancea and Botoşani.
The targeted phenomena consist of important discharges on slopes, torrents and streams, rapid floods on small rivers, with possible effects of local flooding and increases in flows and levels”, INHGA said.
The floods caused by Cyclone Boris have played havoc in several Moldovan counties, like Galati and Vaslui over the past weekend, with massive damages in thousands of households and, unfortunately, with six victims.
