How does cyclone Boris affect Romania?

The meteorological phenomenon, cyclone Boris, which has already affected some countries in Europe, causing massive snowfall in Italy, for example, is expected from tonight in Romania as well.

Meteorologists warn us that, this weekend, we will have unstable weather, rain, even floods in certain regions, but also sleet or snow in the mountains. In certain areas of the country, we will have temperatures, during the night, even up to 10 degrees Celsius.

“Cyclone Boris is formed/was generated in the Gulf of Genoa and has support from a very cold air mass that descends from the polar regions. The cold air cyclone is, in fact, the center of a low, vast pressure mass that extends over Central Europe and towards the east, southeast, including the area of our country.

Cyclone Boris, this structure of low pressure at ground level, with very cold air in the higher layers, creates the conditions of heavy precipitation, which will manifest itself during the next days, 2-3 days, in countries of Central Europe (such as Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, even Hungary), but also in certain regions of Romania. There are areas that are already on meteorological alert in relation to this development of the weather.

In Europe, amounts of rain are expected to accumulate, during these days, even over 200 liters per square meter. Special attention is paid during this period to the Danube Basin, which can react following this phenomenon and thus increase the flow of the Danube”, Florinela Georgescu, Director of Weather Forecasting at the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), told Digi24.

“From tonight, September 13, but also tomorrow, September 14, in our country, in most areas, significant precipitation is expected, but larger amounts in the Moldova area. Thus, the volume of water that will accumulate may take us into the code orange area that was already issued this morning. And, because the weather is warm here today, there are high temperatures almost everywhere in the country, this impact of the precipitation front will also be accompanied by manifestations of thermal instability. There will be electrical discharges, short-term intensification of the wind, torrential aspect of the rains, which will collect significant amounts of water. The peak period will be at the weekend, and from next week the temperatures will return to normal for the period we are in,” said the meteorologist.

There will be below 15C in the western part of the country, and heavy rainfall. Temperatures in Romania will drop significantly overall, even by more than 10 degrees below what we recorded today.

In the night from Sunday to Monday, when there will be a clearer sky, it is possible that the temperature will be colder, below 10 degrees Celsius, in the western and central part of the country.

Cyclone Boris brought the first snows to Italy. In the north of the country, temperatures have dropped sharply, and in the mountain areas the snow layer already measures 10 centimeters.

If at the beginning of the winter the thermometers showed 30 degrees, now temperatures up to 15 degrees Celsius are recorded in northern Italy. It’s code orange for bad weather in Lombardy, and forecasters are warning that storms and floods are ahead.
