Mysterious helicopter with Belarusian pilot crashed in Maramures

A helicopter allegedly made in the former Soviet Union, flying illegally in Romania’s air space, has crushed near Săpânța, Maramures in northern Romania. The pilot has been found dead and investigators say the air crash had taken place few days ago.

The helicopter wreck has been found by a shepherd in a forest near Săpânța, in a remote area. The Kamov-26 helicopter is usually used in agriculture to spray the fields with insecticides or fertilizers.

Yet, investigators suspect that the aircraft would have been used for cigarette smuggling this time, especially it has no license plates.

The Belarusian pilot was an air force major and had been gone missing in early March, after he had left Ukraine.
