Tornado in southern Romania: 18 houses without roof, bus with 39 passengers turned over. Code Red for floods in Timis and Caras Severin

A tornado has developed out of the blue in Drajna, Calarasi county, southern Romania on Tuesday evening. People who were on the road, stopped their cars, scared about this unusual weather event in our country. Many took the tornado on camera, images and video capturing the extreme meteorological phenomenon flooding social media channels.

Following damage assessment, the Interior Ministry reported that 18 houses and annexes have been 100% affected by the tornado. Initially, the Calarasi prefect had said that at least at least 10-12 houses  had remained roofless because of the tornado in Drajna-Dragalina-Brancoveanu area.

Labour minister Marius Budai told Digi 24 that after the complete damage assessment the Government will issue a resolution to grant financial aid  to the people affected by the tornado.

Enel has announced that they had restored all power lines affected by the severe weather storm in the region and reported that there were no more locality without electricity on May 1.

Bus overturned on the road, tens injured

A bus with 39 passengers on board overturned also in Drajna area due to the strong wind. Calarasi county was under code orange for storms, strong wind and rainfalls on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1, in northern and southern Romania, including the seaside.

The bus overturned on national road DN21, near Constantin Brancoveanu locality, Calarasi county. The coach was driving from Calarasi to Slobozia. 12 people received medical aid, while 4 were transported to hospital.

Firemen also intervened in Ialomita, the neighbouring county of Calarasi, in over 20 emergency situations also due to the storms and heavy rainfall, with many pulled out roofs and broken electricity poles.

According to Ialomita Emergency Situations Inspectorate, an empty truck overturned on the road due to the strong wind in the industrial area of Tandarei town.

Code Red for floods in western country

Meanwhile, the bad weather continued to wreck havoc in some areas. The National Hydrology Institute has issued a code red alert for floods today for Bega, Faget, Nadrag (Timis River), Bistra rivers in Caras Severin and Timis counties.

Several courtyards have been already flooded following the heavy rains in the past hours in Caras Severin county.
