Stephen the Great’s Inscriptions (Pisanii) found undamaged in Kherson

Stephen the Great’s inscriptions were found in Kherson, announced the Minister of Culture, Lucian Romaşcanu.

On November 4, the Minister of Culture told Digi24.ro that he would call his Ukrainian counterpart to find a solution to save the Pisanii of Stephen the Great, which are believed to have been stolen by Putin’s soldiers during evacuation from Kherson.

“We made a task force as soon as the war started to determine how to get heritage goods out of Ukraine in case the Ukrainian side would request it,” explained the Minister of Culture.

He mentioned that Romania has many assets of common heritage on Ukrainian territory and that for objects of great significance for the history of Romanians, such as the Pisanii (Inscriptions) of Stephen the Great, Romanian officials will make every effort to recover them, if this is possible.

Anatol Popescu, the founding president of the Association of Romanians from Southern Bessarabia, had previously claimed that Stephen the Great’s inscriptions on slabs, 15th-century artifacts taken from the walls of the White Citadel on the Dniester, had been stolen from the museum in Kherson and taken to Crimea by Putin’s army.

Pisanii are slabs with Slavonic writing that attest to events on the walls of the fortress, says Popescu.
