The first hospital for children with cancer to be built in Romania, exclusively from donations

A state hospital for children suffering of cancer will be built in Romania, for the first time in the past 30 years. The initiative is the more praiseworthy as the construction is not supported by any state funds, but exclusively from private donations. “Daruieste Viata/ Give Life” NGO managed to raise EUR 4 million.

The hospital will be erected in the courtyard of “Marie Curie” hospital for children in Bucharest, where there is already a pediatric oncological section, but where there isn’t enough room or proper conditions.

The new modern hospital will have sterile wards with their own toilets, playgrounds, library and even a cinema. All ‘packed’ in a unique building, where the tree, as the symbol of life, will be found both in the indoor and outdoor architecture. The construction will stretch on 8,000 square meters and will have basement, first floor and other three stores for Oncology and Radiotherapy.

There will be 52 beds in the oncology section for the in-patients, 10 beds for the oncological surgery section, 25 beds for the ambulatory, ten sterile wards and many other facilities.

At present, 31 children and at least 31 parents are sharing the two bathrooms and the two showers of the existing oncology section at “Marie Curie” hospital every day. The patients and their bearers sometimes queue to use the toilet or have a shower.

The risk of infection is higher under these circumstances. The ideal situation is to have maximum two patients in a ward and the parents to stay somewhere else,” said doctor Cristian Scurtu. He also informed that specialists will be sent abroad for training and then they will come back to work here.

“It’s a hospital of the future, equipped with all that childhood means. Even if a child is sick, he or she has the right to live his/her childhood,” said Oana Gheorghiu, one of the NGO founders.

However, the total value of the investment has been estimated at EUR 8 million, so volunteers still need more 4 million euros to carrry out the project.

Companies can direct 20% of the tax on profit to the hospital,” said the other founder of the NGO, Carmen Uscatu.

Donations can be made directly on the association’s website,, but also by sending a SMS with the text SPITAL, at 8844.
