The most popular searches of Romanians on Google in 2024

As always in December, Google presents the lists of the most popular (trending) searches of Romanians in the year that is just ending. These indicate the topics and people that generated the most interest in searches in Romania, the most popular events in 2024 for Romanians, what interested them in terms of movies, series and recipes or what questions they asked.

The most important sporting events have left their mark on Romanians’ Google searches in 2024. The European Football Championship, where the Romanian team reached the round of 16 of the competition, dominates this list, and the Olympic Games, where Romanian athletes achieved very good results, are also in the top 5. The surprise candidate in the presidential elections, the latest iPhone model, the medical problems of one of the most beloved Romanian actors, Florin Piersic, as well as the passing of some personalities have influenced Romanians’ searches in 2024. In the top 10 we find Coldplay, a band that had 2 concerts in Romania this summer, which were not without controversy, as well as the dessert of the year, Dubai chocolate.

The list of the most popular movies in Google searches in Romania is dominated by Dune 2, and this year only one Romanian movie entered the top 10. In 2024, we added Christmas-related searches to the year’s lists. Christmas markets dominate the Christmas top, the most searched ones being those in the country – Bucharest, Sibiu, Cluj or Craiova. Romanians also look for Christmas markets abroad, with Vienna and Budapest on this list. Dubai chocolate is the “star” of searches this year, dominating two of the lists – the one for recipes and the questions “How?” – and being found in the top 10 popular searches. In addition, “What is kataiful” is most likely a search related to Dubai chocolate, as kataiful is one of its ingredients.

Romanians asked Google “how to recalculate pension” or searched for various information about voting, business or gift ideas, what to invest small amounts or 50,000 euros in. They were also eager to find out how many days are left until Christmas, what a “non-binary” person is, how to make socata. and some even wanted to know if there was a specific recipe for 5 liters of this drink.

The tops of the most popular searches on Google in 2024 were made using “trending” lists: searches that have registered a sustained increase compared to 2023, over a significant period of time. “Trending” lists are different from the lists of the most searched terms (phrases/words ordered by absolute search volumes on Google and which tend to change very little from year to year). The analysis of trending searches allows the identification of interests specific to 2024. Below are this year’s lists.
