Two Romanian Cities Rank Among World’s Happiest in 2024 Index

The cities of Cluj and Brașov were included in the world ranking of the 250 happiest cities worldwide, occupying the position number 195 and 220, respectively, in the “Happy City Index 2024” top.

Conducted internationally, the “Happy City Index 2024” ranking assesses the complexity of determining happiness in a city, taking into account five main areas: citizens, governance, environment, economy and mobility.

The first position in the list of the happiest cities is occupied by the city of Aarhus in Denmark, followed by Zürich in Switzerland and Berlin in Germany. Among the happiest countries in the world is Finland, ranked first, followed by Denmark, Iceland and Sweden.

“A city of happy people will always mean something different to a five-year-old expecting places to play and the opportunity to build relationships with parents as part of quality time spent together, where a quick return home from the workplace will be crucial. Other expectations would be defined by students, corporate professionals, senior citizens and every other group of people with specific needs.

Therefore, it is not fair to establish a single city-leader. It is most appropriate to establish a group of cities committed to happiness cultivation and growth, where education, inclusive policies, economy, mobility, environmental protection, access to green areas or innovation are not only important components of the official policies created, but are also visible in the implemented solutions, tangible for the residents and have a direct impact on their quality of life,” the authors of the index say.
Cluj-Napoca, central Romania, nestled in the Transylvanian hills, ranks 195th in the Happy City Index, with a total score of 1291,7, among the “Bronze Cities”, those ranked form 100th to 250th.
Brasov, also in Transylvania, at the foot of Tampa Peak, in the Curvature Carpathians, ranks 22oth, with a total score of 1249,7.
