Update: Fake Italian physician Matteo Politi remanded for 30 days, reportedly helped by fake lawyer!

Matteo Politi, the Italian who graduated only 9 grades and impersonated a physician, performing plastic surgery in Romania, has been remanded for 30 days. He had been caught at Curtici customs, trying to flee from Romania.

Politi, aka Matthew Mode, is charged with fraud. His lawyer claims the graduating diploma issued by the Medicine University in Pristina has been attested by the Education Ministry.

Politi arrived Wednesday evening at the Bucharest Police 4th precinct, after being arrested at Curtici customs.

The Italian received the seal code from the Medical Bureau for Information and Bio-statistics on March 23, 2018. The employee who issued the document has been disciplinary transferred until the investigation is completed, the Public Health Directorate informs.

In a close development, lawyer Monica Cercelescu, Communication Director with the National Guild of Bars, has told Europa FM on Friday that Matteo Politi was helped by a fake lawyer.

“The name mentioned publicly is not included in the list of attorneys in Romania. We cannot mention the name as an investigation is ongoing, we don’t know what really happened, if the person pretended to be a lawyer or just representative of the Italian. The name is not on the lawyers’ list. So, this person is not an attorney,” Monica Cercelescu said.

Police General Inspectorate – Criminal Investigation Directorate, has informed since November last year the Guild of Bars that a specialized network exists, falsifying documents for those who want to work as lawyers, although they are not members of the guilds of bars, Europa FM private radio broadcaster further informs.

The National Guild of Bars recommends those who want to hire a lawyer to verify him on the list of attorney, the only official document to confirm his qualification.

Matteo Politi, the Italian who performed surgery in several private clinics, although he had graduated only eight grades, was caught by Police Wednesday morning, at Curtici customs, while trying to flee the country by train. He was on an Inter Regio train on route from Bucharest to Budapest.

Matteo Politi said Tuesday evening for Antena 1 TV private broadcaster that a lawyer helped him get the free practice rights and she told him all documents are valid. He refuses to say where he is.

“When I arrived in Romania, as I did not know the system, I turned to a lawyer to whom I handed all the needed documents. I’ve also signed a power of attorney document, as she requested. She had all my documents and she dealt with the issues. Finally, she said I have the free practice rights in Romania. (…) When I’ve been admitted, with the lawyer’s support, I could call myself a physician. An institution handed me this right… my diplomas have been admitted and diplomas have been validated,” Politi told the Xtra Night Show.

Health Minister Sorina Pintea said Wednesday morning that the Public Health Directorate (DSP) employee, who had issued the seal for Matteo Politi, said she did it out of pity.
