Victims of the September 11, 2001 attack, commemorated at the Deveselu Base. Defence Minister and US Ambassador attended

The attacks on September 11, 2001 were commemorated on Tuesday at the Deveselu Base, where Defence Minister Mihai Fifor and US Ambassador to Bucharest Hans Klemm attended the ceremonies.

The two officials paid a ‘familiarisation visit’ to the Deveselu Naval Support Unit, which is located at the Romanian Military Base 99 in Deveselu, and hosts the Aegis Ashore Anti-Missile Defense System, antena3.ro informs.

During the ceremony the US and Romania flags and the NATO flag were raised. The US flag was flying at half-mast.

The event presented the chronology of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US, and commemorated the memory of the victims and those of the intervention services.

Approximately 3,000 people, including Romanians, died in the terrorist attacks.

Ambassador Hans Klemm said that what followed the attacks showed that this kind of aggressive action “cannot destroy the foundation of America and its allies.”
