War veterans’ allowances up by 75 pc

The government decided on Wednesday to raise the war veterans’ allowances by 75 percent. PM Ponta argued the compensations are still very low and explained that “veteran” term is also related to those involved in recent theatres of operations.

“The term of veteran is not similar anymore only to somebody very old and we have military who have been in theatres of operations whom we also call veterans. Anyway, the allowances are very low, the rise is substantial, but far from covering the usual level,” the premier said.

The Day of War Veterans was celebrated on Tuesday and Wednesday by the Romanian Defense Ministry through shows, marathons, military religious ceremonies and exhibitions.

President Klaus Iohannis also released a message in which he voices gratitude for the veterans’ sacrifice for the country.

The Romanian Government decided under Decree 1222/2007 that April 29 will be remembered as the Day of War Veterans as a means of acknowledging the veterans’ merits in the defense of Romania’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and interests.
