What to know about first clothing drop off bin in Bucharest…

As Romania goes greener, recycling becomes more and more important. Thus, as of Thursday, March 10, those interested have at their disposal the first container in Bucharest for recycling clothes, which is installed in front of the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Czech Centre, namely on 11, Ion Ghica street, as a press release informs.

These institutions, which had the initiative of placing the container, are collaborating with a number of NGOs to gather clothes and shoes for humanitarian purposes. Similar bins already exist in more than 90 localities in Romania, but the one in front of the Czech Embassy is the first of its kind in Bucharest.

“At the beginning of the project we collected clothes for helping refugees camp in Serbia. We have organized the whole process, we announced the collect, we shared the donations and we have dealt with their transport. We realized that in Bucharest there is still no place to collect clothes or shoes to charity. We would like that by putting the first container for textile in front of our office, to inspire other organizations to make similar clothing recycling places,” Frantisek Zachoval, director of Czech Centre in Bucharest stated.

In turn, Vladimir Valky, H.E. Mr. Ambassador of Czech Republic in Bucharest pointed out that textiles represent over 20 percent of mixed waste. “Clothing drop off bins have great potential to save the environment.”

For now, in Romania there is no possibility of recycling textiles because nobody has the necessary technology. Therefore, the container in front of the Czech Embassy is only for clean clothes without tears that can be redistributed and reused.
