Whitewash attempt in the case of traffic officer dead after his motorbike hit a pothole in Bucharest

28 year-old traffic police officer Bogdan Cosmin Gigina working at the Bucharest Trafiic Police died on Tuesday night after felling with his motorbike in a pothole on Stirbei Voda Boulevard in Bucharest. The pothole had been dug for some works at the gas network, but this information lost any significance after the media disclosed that the police officer was not in an ordinary mission of traffic flow decongestion, but he was part of the team that was running the motorcade of Interior minister Gabriel Oprea. It was only 2 days after the accident that the Bucharest Police gave a press release, confirming the police officer was part of the minister’s suite.

However, the press release just mentioned that minister Oprea, also deputy premier, had taken part in “an activity within an institution belonging to the security and public order field.”

There were no explanations on who gave the green light for the motorcade, as, according to the law, the prime minister is the only member of the Government who is entitled to an official motorcade. For a minister to have one, somebody must Ok it.

Besides, there is also no knowledge why minister Oprea needed the motorcade in the first place, and why the convoy didn’t stop at the accident scene, as eyewitnesses reported.

Interior Minister Oprea has kept silence during all this time, while PM Victor Ponta also refused on Friday to answer the question if Oprea had the legal right to use the motorcade, mentioning he will only answer questions on the budget rectification.

Traffic officer Bogdan Gigina was buried with military honors on Friday, in the presence of about 800 persons, out of whom 600 were his colleagues wearing police uniforms.

He has previously been ranked post-mortem as sub-inspector. At the same time, he had been awarded post-mortem the National Order for Merit with the knight rank. The decision was published in the Official Gazette on Thursday, without being officially announced, as usually. It is signed by president Klaus Iohannis and counter-signed by PM Victor Ponta, at the suggestion of VP Gabriel Oprea, Interior minister.

Oprea was not seen waiting the funeral, but Interior ministry sources told local media he has come for a short time at the chapel where the officer’s coffin had been laid.
