Women prevail in Romania, though the female population is more “grey-headed” than males

There were about 10.1 million women in Romania on January 1, 2016 out of the total of 19.7 million inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

Women in Romania are more predominant in the cities than in the countryside. 5.55 millions live in the city, which is 52.3% out of the total urban population, while the percentage of the women in the countryside is 49.9%.

However, the female population is “more aged” than the male one by 3.2 years. The national average age is 41.5 years old, the women’s average age is 43.1 years old and the men’s average age is 39.9 years old.

Women are more than men in 40 counties, except for Vaslui and Tulcea.

The most aged women (aged 65 and more) have been registered in Teleorman, Valcea and Giurgiu counties (all in southern Romania), while the less aged women are Ilfov and Timis. Most of the aged women are living in the urban area (52%).

The number of women aged from 15 to 49 (considered potential moms) counts for 4.62 millions, half of the female population (45.8%) and 23.4% of the total resident population.

Among women aged from 15 to 49, the highest birth rates were reported in Vaslui (58.6%), Suceava (53.8%) and Bistrita-Nasaud (53.6%), while the lowest are in Gorj (32.1%) and Olt (34.9%). The female fertility rate was 42.4 children per 1,000 women of fertile age.

In 2015, there were 197,491 children born in Romania, resulting in a birth rate of 10 babies to 1,000 inhabitants. The trend of previous years also maintained in 2015, with more boys born than girls (106 boys versus 100 girls).

Birth rate has registered a positive trend in 2015 against 2014, both in the cities and in the countryside. Thus, birth rate increased in urban areas in 2015 from 9.8% (in 2014) to 10.2%, while in the countryside from 9.5% in 2014 to 9.7%. Birth rate in the city was higher then in the countryside in 2015.

At the same time, the official domestic statistics reveal that, indeed, Romanian women tend to become mothers at an early age, information which is confirmed by the latest Eurostat data, according to which most young mothers in the European Union live in Romania and Bulgaria.
