Cannes: “Dogs” by Romanian Bogdan Mirică wins FIPRESCI’s jury vote within A Certain Regard

“Toni Erdmann” Romanian co-production wins FIPRESCI in the official competition.

“Dogs” feature film by Romanian director Bogdan Mirică, a crime thriller set in a benighted corner of Romania, won FIPRESCI’s jury vote for best picture in this year’s Un Certain Regard.

Mirică’s debut feature belongs to a tradition of cynical, almost nihilistic crime thrillers in which a relatively petty motive can leave dozens lying in pools of their own blood. Though we experience the film through the eyes of a naïve outsider, Roman (Dragoș Bucur), who leaves the law and order of the city to tend to an inheritance issue, the first shot — in which flies buzz ominously as the camera tracks through nettles and weeds to a stagnant pool of water, the calm surface of which is disturbed first by bubbles and then the shocking appearance of a severed human foot — promises something far more sinister just beneath the surface of this rural grassland,” reads a review of the film by Variety.com.

At the same time, the Romanian-German co-production “Toni Erdmann” by Maren Ade won the International Critics’ Prize Saturday for best picture in Cannes Competition.

„Toni Edermann” says the story of a father who is scheduling an unexpected visit to her daughter who works in Bucharest, Romania. Romanian Ada Solomon is among the co-producers. Nine Romanian actors are also starring in the film: Alexandru Papadopol Dascălu), Vlad Ivanov (Illiescu), Ingrid Bisu (Anca), Radu Banzaru (Bogdan), Miriam Rizea (Flora) as well as Cosmin Padureanu, Manuela Ciucur (Frau Rodica), Luana Stoica (Iliescu’s secretary), Victoria Cocias (Flavia).

According to AFP, the Romanian movies racing in the official competition of Cannes 2016, “Bacalaureat” by Cristian Mungiu and “Sieranevada” by Cristi Puiu are among the favorites for winning the Palme d’Or.
