Cannes festival hits the road. Three Romanian films racing

The 69th edition of Cannes International Film Festival kicks off today, May 11, with three Romanian movies racing. This year Romania seems to enjoy the most consistent film presence in all the Cannes Festival’s history.

Two Romanian feature films by famous directors Cristian Mungiu and Cristi Puiu were shortlisted in the official selection.

Bacalaureat, Cristian Mungiu (Romania) and Sieranevada, Cristi Puiu (Romania) are racing for the Cannes’ Palme D’Or this year, next to famous names such as Pedro Almodovar, Jim Jarmusch, Xavier Dolan or Dardenne brothers.

Dogs (Caini) by Bogdan Mirica (Romania) is competing for Un Certain Regard section, while “4:15 p.m. end of the world” short film directed by Cătălin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Sarga was selected in the official short film competition.

Another Romanian movie, “All rivers run into the sea” directed by Alexandru Badea is joining the Cinéfondation section.

The Romanian cinema will be also represented within Marche du Film, with 8 movies to be screened: “Cabbage, potatoes and other demons” by Şerban Georgescu, “Double” by Catrinel Danaiata, “The anniversary” by Dan Chişu, “Hit the trail with dad” by Anca Miruna Lăzărescu, “Beyond the railway” by Cătălin Mitulescu, “Box” by Florin Şerban, “The world is mine” by Nicolae Constantin Tanase and “Lie me sweetly in the Old Town” by Iura Luncasu.

Romania’s stand within Marche du Film will deliver update information about the Romanian film industry while connecting Romanian filmmakers with the international cinema world, with foreign institutions or production and distribution companies.

Two Romanian co-productions are also present at Cannes this year: “Toni Erdmann” a Germany-Austria-Romania coproduction (with Romanian co-producer Ada Solomon) racing in the official competition and “Album”, a Turkey-France-Romania coproduction (Oana Iancu and Calin Peter Netzer as Romanian coproducers) running in the Semaine de la Critique.

At the same time, the Romanian film director Radu Munteanu is part of the jury at Cinefondation and short film sections.

Producer of “Illegitimate”, Anamaria Antoci was selected in the Producers on the Move programme (May 14-17), while female director Ana Damian will take part in the Talents Adami Cannes, a programme aiming at discovering young actors aged 18 to 30.
