Interview with representatives of Galleri CC, an artist-run gallery from Sweden, which is to attend the art fair in Bucharest, an event supported by The Romania Journal as media partner.
Is your first participation in Art Safari exhibition? What will Galleri CC put on display in Bucharest? How many works/paintings will your gallery exhibit during the art fair?
Yes, this will be our first participation in Art Safari Bucharest. We will show Camilla Edström Ödemark (FI) and Rina Eide Løvaasen (NO) who are both based in Sweden. At the moment we are in the process of discussing and coming up with what we want to show. We aim to show some of their latest works.
What can you tell us about the art you are promoting? Style, works, artists, message….
Both artists work in various media. Camilla Edström Ödemark (b.1985, Åland, Finland) works mainly with video and installation and Rina Eide Løvaasen (b. 1988, Porsgrunn, Norway) works mainly with painting but as well with sculpture, video and performance.
Still from “This Happened to Us”
In consideration of style, when choosing the two artist, our purpose is to give the viewers of Art Safari Bucharest an insight of what contemporary Nordic art can look like today. Edström Ödemark’s artistic practice deals with how power structures and hierarchies are established and maintained in a national and Eurocentric consciousness. Eide Løvaasen work research based and has recently focused her practice on the examination of value, memory vs. time, symbolic worth and power. Løvaasen interests in experiences that don’t survive time contra fiction that does and this sets the core of her practice.
What is your target by attending Art Safari in Romania?
We see our participation as a great opportunity to show Swedish contemporary art. Our main target by attending Art Safari in Romania is to build bridges, expand our network, meet artists, galleries, curators and people we otherwise would not have been able to meet.
How is the Nordic art style different from the Eastern European one?
We come with an open mind and open eyes and hope to be able to answer this question after Art Safari Bucharest!

How do you see the current art market in Europe? Any predictions for the upcoming five, ten years?
Galleri CC is a non-commercial, artist-run gallery located in Malmö, Sweden. We are seven artists running the gallery whom take on the roles of curators and partake in exhibition concepts in collaborations with artists invited by us. We are Benjamin Andersson, Arngrímur Borgþórsson, Maja Gade, Andreas Knag-Danielsen, Madelaine Sillfors, Linus Svensson and Sofia Wickman. Since we are a non-commercial gallery we have very little to do with the commercial art market in Europe. Our exhibition is being funded by Malmö Stad and Kulturrådet which makes it possible for us to promote art without commercial interest.
What is your opinion about the social media influence on art? Are art and art products more visible and widespread with all the technology expansion or art has freestanding audience who would consume it anyway regardless of Internet, social media, etc?
Social media has become a vital tool for artists and art institutions. There is no doubt that art has become more visible and widespread through the birth of the Internet. Today we can reach people and places that before were inaccessible and in that sense one could perhaps say that art has become democratized.
