Netflix Opts Out of Filming ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 in Romania

The second season of ‘Wednesday,’ the popular Netflix series produced and directed by the legendary Tim Burton, will no longer be filmed in Romania. The production is set to relocate to another European country, according to Variety magazine and Deadline.
Wednesday was the first original Netflix series shot by the American company in Romania since the launch of its streaming platform in the Romanian market in 2016. The Tim Burton-directed series enjoyed tremendous global success.
Among the locations featured in the series are Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, the train station in Sinaia, Monteoru House in Bucharest, and the Old Greenhouse at the Bucharest Botanical Garden.

Urban.ro also notes that the first season filmed in Romania had a significant impact on the country, providing employment for many technicians and featuring Romanian actors in the series. Moreover, a portion of the Romanian crew behind the camera was nominated for Emmy Awards alongside the British and American teams.

The Romanian tabloid press has been reporting since December last year that Season 2 of Wednesday will no longer be filmed in Romania, stating that the producers of the series were dissatisfied with the ‘inflation’ of costs by the Romanian side when it was announced that filming would take place for a Netflix series.
Now, both Variety, one of the largest magazines in the entertainment industry, and Deadline, one of the most well-known cinematography-focused websites, report that their sources have independently confirmed that Season 2 of Wednesday is set to be filmed in Ireland.

Although Netflix has not officially confirmed yet that Season 2 of Wednesday will be filmed in Ireland, the information is considered so reliable that it has been picked up by sources such as the Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN) and publications like The Economic Times.

It appears that the decision was made after the conclusion of the Hollywood actors’ strike. Netflix aims to commence filming for the second season of the series, confirmed earlier this year, in April 2022. This suggests that the next season of the show is expected to be released towards the end of next year or at the latest in early 2025.
