Romanian film by Radu Jude wins Karlovy Vary film festival

A film directed by Romanian director Radu Jude has won the Karlovy Vary international film festival.
“I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” has been awarded the Crystal Globe during the closing ceremony of the renowned film festival in the Czech Republic on Saturday night, thus becoming the first Romanian feature film receiving the prestigious trophy.
Jude’s movie has also been awarded the Europe Cinemas Label Award, established in 2003 to improve the distribution and promotion of the European films across cinemas.
“I think it is an award saying more things about those who are granting it than about the ones receiving it,” Radu Jude told the closing gala, also attended by the film’s producer, Ada Solomon, who boasts many international film trophies.
12 features films from Turkey, Slovenia, Canada, Spain and some others, have raced in the official competition at Karlovy Vary, where Jude’s sixth feature film was released as a world premier on July 2.
The film, dubbed by film critics as ‘an intelligent warning on populism’, and ‘a bold comedy-drama’, tells the story of a historical re-enactment of the Odessa battle during the World War II, for a street show.
Radu Jude has won the jury of the Berlin Film Festival in 2015 with “Aferim!” film, while his next film in 2016, “Scarred Hearts” won two prizes at Locarno Film Festival.
