The Romanian film Libertate/Freedom (directed by Tudor Giurgiu) was selected in several international film festivals that will take place this fall in Europe and the USA. The film thus continues its festival journey after the awards obtained at Sarajevo, TIFF, Cinefest Miskolc (Hungary) or Waterloo Historical Film Festival (Belgium). The story inspired by real events that took place in Sibiu in December 1989 is still playing in cinemas in Romania, where it has already been watched by over 30,000 viewers.
Libertate is among the 12 films in the Official Competition of the Cottbus Film Festival (November 7-12), considered one of the most important events for the promotion of Eastern European cinema. Tudor Giurgiu’s film was also selected in the European Competition of the Arras Festival, which aims to bring contemporary European cinema to the public, and is part of the “Without borders” section of the 19th edition of SlobodnaZona Film Festival organized simultaneously in three cities in Serbia – Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš.
Libertate can also be watched in Greece, at the most important film festival in the Greek space, the one in Thessaloniki. In the USA, Libertate will be screened at the opening of the fourth edition of the Romanian Film Festival in Washington DC, organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Romanian Embassy in the USA.
Libertate cast includes some of the most famous and appreciated Romanian actors: Iulian Postelnicu, Mirela Oprișor, Alex Bogdan, Alexandru Papadopol, Alex Calangiu, Andreea Grămoșteanu, Cuzin Toma, Leonid Doni, Andi Vasluianu, Ștefan Iancu or Ionuț Caras.
This year the film won the Award for Most Popular Romanian Film at TIFF, the CICAE Award in Sarajevo, the Ecumenical Jury Award at Cinefest Miskolc and the Award for the best costumes and sets (signed by Viorica Petrovici and Vali Igigheanu respectively) at Waterloo Historical Film Festival.
Libertate is a Romania-Hungary co-production, produced by Libra Films and Mythberg Films and distributed in Romania by Transilvania Film. For international distribution, the film was acquired by the London-based company Reason8.
