“Toni Erdmann” directed by Maren Ade and co-produced by Romanian Ada Solomon has been awarded the best film of the year by the FIPRESCI film critics federation. The distinction will be awarded on September 16, withing the opening gala of the Film Festival in San Sebastian. It’s for the first time that this award goes to a production directed by a female filmmaker.
Maren Ade’s feature film, almost entirely shot in Romania, the only movie launched in 2016 recently included in the Top 100 best films of the 21st century, is Germany’s Oscar proposal, being considered a serious candidate for the Best foreign language film.
“Toni Erdmann” was also awarded the FIPRESCI prize for the best film at Cannes this year.
A German comedy, the movie tells the story of an older man begins to play pranks on his adult daughter in order to reconnect with her. The character of Winfried was loosely based on Ade’s own father who wore a pair of fake teeth she gave him as a gag gift to play practical jokes.
