The largest film festival in Romania toes the line in Cluj-Napoca in about ten days. The Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) will bring a selection of good films, concerts, exhibitions, debates and parties during May 27-June 5.
248 productions in 64 countries (216 feature films and 32 short films) will be screened within the festival, with 850 Romanian and foreign guests arriving in Cluj. 20 locations will host the screenings and special events, while more than 300 volunteers will keep track of them next to the TIFF team.
In a press conference on Tuesday, the festival’s president Tudor Giurgiu together with the artistic director Mihai Chirilov and manager Cristian Hordila announced the guests who will be celebrated for their career at TIFF 2016: producer Iain Smith, Romanian actresses Carmen Galin (70) and Lujza Orosz (89).
Iain Smith, one of the most influential and prolific film producers nowadays, the man behind Mad Max: Fury Road, the Fifth Element or Seven Years in Tibet is one of the special guests coming to the 15th edition of TIFF, where is going to be awarded the Special Prize for Contribution brough to the world cinema withing the closing gala on June 4, hosted by the National Theatre in Cluj. The producer will be also attending the screening of Max Mad: Fury Road in Open Air Unirii Square on Friday, June 3 at 21:45.
Legendary actress of the Romanian film and theatre, Carmen Galin, who turned 70 this year, will be awarded the Excellence Price on June 4 in an awarding ceremony at the National Theatre in Cluj.
The prize for the entire career will be awarded to Lujza Orosz, renowned actress of the Magyar State Theatre in Cluj. A special screening of the „Ire/Urgie” film co-directed by Iosif Demian and Andrei Blaier will be also dedicated to the 89-year-old actress in her presence at Cinema Arta on June 3, 14:30.
The Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) held during May 27-June 5 is runing under the sign of diversity and ingenuity, with the young filmmakers artfully demoshiling the conventions of genres such as horror, thriller, romance or western. The 12 movies racing for the Transylvania trophy are coming from 16 countries: France, Tunisia, Belgium, Iceland, Denmark, Australia, India, Bulgaria, Romania, UK, Germany, Israel, Spain, Cambodia and, for the first time in the festival’s history, Vanuatu. Nine of them are debut films.
