He is Robbie” fucking” Williams, as he introduced himself on the stage of Constitutiei Square and he was more than entertaining the over 60,000 Romanian fans on Friday night in the most-expected gig of the year: he performed his internationally renowned hits, while expressing himself in his famous nonconformist language and bringing humour on stage.
Robbie presented a short funny autobiography to the Bucharest audience: ‘I was born in 1975, in England, I sang in a boys’ band, I went into rehab, I left the band, I went into rehab again, I got fat, I lost weight, I wrote the song named ‘Angels‘ and I became famous. However, he has constantly wondered how famous he was in Romania. I didn’t know I am so well-known here. That is…I know I am famous in England… but I didn’t expect you to be so many’, he said.
Robbie Williams kicked off the show by performing “Let me entertain you”, continued with “Rock DJ” when he also took off his jacket and remained in his vest, and then “Monsoon” “Road to Mandalay“, “Feel“, “No Regrets“, “Love Supreme” and “Millennium” followed. “We Will Rock You” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” interpretations did not miss the show either.
A touching moment came when Robbie invited his father on stage to perform together “Better Man“.
But the most entertaining moment of the event was by far the one when the famous UK artist brought a young woman from the audience to stand by him when singing “Candy“, and so, Lumi from Constanta became famous for “threading the boards” with Robbie Williams. ‘I know it’s embarrassing because your husband is here, but…do you want to go to bed with me?’, was his question, which of course did nothing but prefaced the next artistic moment: a vertical bed on stage, on which pastel-coloured images were screened and behind that Robbie performing next to the Romanian young woman.
After a 90-minute explosive show, Robbie Williams came back on stage while paying homage to Freddie Mercury by performing “Bohemian Rhapsody” and to George Michael by singing “Freedom”. He also invited the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” to George Michael, who celebrated his anniversary a week ago. George Michael’s Freedom actually meant a lot for him, as, after leaving Take That, Williams launched his solo career starting off in 1996 by covering this hit.
Williams did not forget about “Angels” in Bucharest, performing it among the last, while the final song was a cover of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way“, which Robbie dedicated to his late father-in-law.
At the end of the show, wearing his vest and a black kilt, Robbie Williams thanked the Romanian audience: You’ve been wonderful today! Sincerely…I didn’t know I am so famous here. I hope you’ve had a good time and I hope we’ve been up to the expectations, the artist said.
In a Twitter post later on, he wrote: “Bucharest: sometimes it’s that good it’s indescribable. As good as any show I’ve ever done…you were unbeatable tonight”.
