Romanian cosmonaut Prunariu joins Discovery in marking Asteroid Day

Discovery Science dedicated the month of June to asteroids, supporting Asteroid Day celebrated on June 30, next to Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu. Viewers will enjoy a whole month of special broadcast on this topic, such as the documentary “Mission Asteroid” narrated by the renowned director David Cronenberg.

Cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu, the only Romanian who flew in the outer space 34 years ago will actively support the Asteroid Day campaign.

“Our solar system is marked by collisions, while the Earth cannot be avoided by these collision either, although we cannot perceive this thing obviously at the level of the latest generations’ active memory. We reached the technologic level that allows us discover most of the celestial objects approaching our planet. It’s time to start developing active technologies to deviate the orbits of these celestial bodies and to protect our planet. At the same time, we must be aware of this phenomenon and understand what could happen, as well as of the internationally unceasing efforts to inform and to protect ourselves. In this respect, Asteroid Day is a strong educational initiative and I am glad to be able to join Discovery’s endeavor to popularize scientific information on asteroids,” Prunariu said.
