“Toni Erdmann” directed by German Maren Ade, co-produced by Romanian Ada Solomon, joins the 2017 Oscar race for the best foreign language film category at the upcoming 89th edition of the Academy Awards.
Therefore, Ada Solomon becomes the first producer in the Romanian cinema history who is nominated for the prestigious awards.
“It’s extraordinary for me that over 700,000 spectators in Germany and over 500,000 in France met Romanian actors through this film, as well as a key character of this story: the city of Bucharest, an extremely strong presence in the movie that was approached from a completely different perspective (…) I am proud I was part of this experience and I hope I’ll attend similar great projects,” Ada Solomon said.
Toni Erdmann” directed by Maren Ade and co-produced by Romanian Ada Solomon has been awarded the best film of the year by the FIPRESCI film critics federation. The distinction was awarded on September 16.
Almost entirely shot in Romania, the only movie launched in 2016 recently included in the Top 100 best films of the 21st century, is Germany’s Oscar proposal, being considered a serious candidate for the Best foreign language film.
“Toni Erdmann” was also awarded the FIPRESCI prize for the best film at Cannes this year.
A German comedy, the movie tells the story of an older man begins to play pranks on his adult daughter in order to reconnect with her. The character of Winfried was loosely based on Ade’s own father who wore a pair of fake teeth she gave him as a gag gift to play practical jokes.
“Toni Erdmann’ will race for the Oscar’s best foreign language film along with ”Land of Mine” (Denmark), ”A Man Called Owe” (Sweden), ”The Salesman” (Iran), ”Tanna” (Australia).
