The new hall of “Ion Dacian” Comic Opera Theatre in Bucharest, the first building dedicated to musical shows built in Romania after 1989 with a total EUR 8.7 M investment, will be commissioned on Saturday, on the occasion of “The Phantom of the Opera” performance. Culture Ministry was funding the investment.
So, after decades when “Ion Dacian” Comic Opera Theatre held its performances in other locations, now it is one step of having a new brand hall which will be inaugurated with “The Phantom of the Opera” national premiere, signed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and directed by Stephen Barlow.
Comic Opera Theatre, inaugurated in 1950, saw its headquarters demolished by the Ceausescu communist regime in 1986 and thus, had to hold its performances in the building of the National Theatre in Bucharest until 2005. Yet, a fire seriously damaged this building, and after a few years of practically renting other performance halls, the Comic Opera had to be permanently on tour countrywide to perform.
The new building of the Comic Opera Theatre is located on 1 Octavian Goga Boulevard, nearby the National Romanian Library. Works have started in 2012, the new headquarters of the 6,381 square meters three-floor building being designed to comply with all modern logistic and technical needs.
The performance hall has 550 seats and the scene has 14 meters in width and 20 meters in depth.
The lounge can also serve as performance hall and the building includes a bookshop, a café and a studio for children.
Tickets for the first four performances on the new stage of the Comic Opera Theatre have run out in a few hours, but other shows of “The Phantom of the Opera” will be staged in February.
