A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Stormy Night, and Take, Ianke and Cadâr – On Stage in Romania This June

In June, theatre lovers can enjoy three remarkable productions that blend classical charm with the freshness of contemporary direction: A Midsummer Night’s Dream – a vibrant reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece (June 9, Bacău), A Stormy Night – the iconic satire by I.L. Caragiale (June 9, Bucharest, and June 10, Drobeta-Turnu Severin), and Take, Ianke and Cadâr – a heartwarming comedy about friendship beyond differences (June 9, Bucharest).

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A fresh vision of one of William Shakespeare’s great works. This new production of the famous comedy keeps the original text but, through the brilliant performance of the cast, firmly anchors it in the present day. With an extraordinary lineup of actors, the play highlights the timelessness of Shakespeare’s work, proving that his themes and characters are just as relevant and captivating today. On a night filled with tension, Ghiță, a tailor shop owner, tries to uncover the truth about his wife Veta’s relationship with Chiriac, his assistant. Along come Rică Venturiano, a hopeless romantic, and Zița, Veta’s sister – both adding to the unforgettable comedy of errors. With witty dialogue and colorful characters, A Stormy Night remains a sharp satire about appearances and hypocrisy, promising an evening full of laughter and delight.

Take, Ianke and Cadâr

Horațiu Mălăele revives one of the most beloved Romanian comedies: Take, Ianke and Cadâr. Written in 1932 by Victor Ion Popa, the play follows the heartfelt and humorous story of three merchants – a Romanian, a Jew, and a Turk – whose deep friendship and playful rivalries transcend their cultural differences. Horațiu Mălăele stars as the wise Ianke, alongside Răzvan Vasilescu as the colorful Cadâr and Mihai Constantin as the good-natured Take. With set design by Maria Miu and detailed direction, this production is more relevant than ever, offering a subtle lesson in tolerance, identity, and the strength of human connection.
