When do Christmas markets open in Romania?

Winter holidays are approaching, and preparations for Christmas markets are in full swing in Romania. From Bucharest to Cluj, locals and tourists are in for surprises with a touch of jingle bells and mulled wine.

The Christmas Market in Bucharest in 2023 at Constitution Square

Bucharest residents eagerly await the official opening of the Christmas Market in Constitution Square. Authorities have announced that it will open on November 30, 2023, on St. Andrew’s Day, offering numerous entertainment options and thematic activities.

The Christmas Market in Constitution Square will be open from November 30 to December 26, 2023, according to the announcement made by the City Hall. The event is already in its sixteenth edition, and admission is free. The residents of the capital will enjoy a 30-meter tall tree adorned with pine branches, festive lights, booths selling crafts and traditional sweets, multiple stages hosting ensembles and artists performing carols and holiday music, and children will delight in Santa’s House.

In addition, on the evening of the Christmas Market’s opening in Constitution Square, festive lights will illuminate the Capital.

At the market, you will find over 130 Christmas booths where artisans and local producers will showcase their art, traditions, and homemade treats.

You can discover seasonal decorations such as hand-painted baubles, ceramic bells, woven wreaths, and other specific ornaments like icons and traditional items, toys, jewelry, or natural cosmetics.

The market will be a real treat for foodies, as traditional dishes such as sweetbread, cakes, homemade chocolate, gingerbread, candies, and jellies will be available.

Here, you can also taste sarmale (cabbage rolls), pork delights, and other Christmas specialties, along with seasonal hot drinks such as mulled wine, hot chocolate, mulled plum brandy, and much more.

The market offers theater performances for children, and starting from December 15, Santa Claus will be present to listen to children’s wishes.

Christmas Market in Drumul Taberei

Another Christmas market in Bucharest is taking place in Drumul Taberei and is called the West Side Christmas Market.

It opens its gates on November 29 and will be held in the Drumul Taberei Park in Sector 6.

Bucharest residents can enjoy here an ice rink, a carousel, and a 33-meter panoramic wheel that offers a view of the entire city. There is also Santa’s House, where children can have fun with the elves.

This market was organized by UNTOLD Univers in collaboration with the Sector 6 City Hall.

As expected, mulled wine and delicacies brought by local producers such as roasted chestnuts, glazed apples, or hot chocolate await those who want to indulge in seasonal treats. The market closes its doors on December 27.

Christmas Market in I.O.R. Park

The surprises for Bucharest residents don’t end here. A third Christmas market in 2023 will take place in I.O.R. Park in the capital and will open on December 1.

The market is called “Santa’s City” and awaits Bucharest residents with a spectacular ice rink, and for the little ones, Santa will make an appearance to listen to all their Christmas wishes.

The decoration is, as every year, enchanting, and the specific winter holiday dishes will not be missing from the stalls. Children will have plenty of interesting activities, while adults can indulge in a glass of mulled wine and admire the lights.

Other cities in Romania to host Christmas markets
