CAS ruled: Ana Bărbosu gets the bronze medal in gymnastics

Sabrina Voinea, in 4th place.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation announced, on Saturday evening, the decision of the Court of Sports Arbitration (CAS) regarding the final result of the gymnastics test at the Olympic Games. The referees decided that Ana Maria Bărbosu will get the bronze medal, and Sabrina Voinea will finish the competition in 4th place.

The CAS hearings lasted approximately 8 hours.

Following the submissions made to the CAS by FRG and COSR, the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided that the bronze medal should go to Ana Maria Bărbosu. “The Romanian Gymnastics Federation, represented by the law firm specialized in sports law, Gherdan si Asociatii SCA, through the coordinating lawyer Sabin Gherdan and the lawyers Călina Tejan and Raul Ștefan Celmare, after a collective effort of five days and four nights, communicates the devices of the meeting TAS in this case:

1. The request registered by Ana Maria Bărbosu is partially admitted.

2.The appeal filed by Jordan Chiles was filed beyond the 1-minute deadline provided by art. 8.5 of the FIG Technical Regulations and is determined to be of no effect.

3.The original score of 13.666 awarded to athlete Jordan Chiles in the final is reinstated. 4.The International Gymnastics Federation will determine the ranking of the final and award the medals in accordance with the decision above.

5. Other requests are rejected FRG, Voinea, vs. International Gymnastics Federation: 1. The application registered by FRG and Sabrina Maneca Voinea is rejected.

As a result of this decision, Ana Maria Bărbosu gets the bronze medal while Sabrina Maneca Voinea finishes the competition in 4th place. Congratulations to both of our gymnasts for the special result obtained at the Olympic Games in Paris!”, said lawyer Sabin Gherdan.

The hearings in Paris started in the early hours of the morning, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided to jointly judge the cases of the two athletes. Following that the decision will also be announced jointly. During the hearings, loopholes were found in the arbitration system, according to golazo.ro.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation requested those from CAS to award bronze medals to Romanian gymnasts as well, Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic Sports Committee.

Sabrina Voinea was scored in the floor final with 13.700, tied with Ana Maria Bărbosu, who, however, ranked ahead of Sabrina with a higher execution score.

Sabrina Voinea contested the grade received from the referees for difficulty, but the gymnast’s appeal was rejected. On the other hand, the appeal filed by the American gymnast Jordan Chiles was approved, and the grade helped her climb to the third step of the podium, in front of the Romanians Ana Maria Bărbosu (4th place) and Sabrina Voinea (5th place).

The CAS decision is final and irrevocable. US Gymnastics can no longer appeal. TAS heard today Cecile Landi (Jordan Chiles’ coach) and Donatella Sacchi (president of the Women’s Technical Committee and president of the Superior Jury) in the cases of Sabrina Voinea and Ana Maria Bărbosu, gymnasts who filed appeals in Lausanne after the floor final, from the Olympic Games in Paris.
