Constantin Gâlcă, appointed coach of Espanyol Barcelona

Former Romanian international Constantin Gâlcă has been appointed head coach of Espanyol Barcelona, the club’s website announced on Monday.
Gâlcă reached an agreement to coach the team until the end of this season and was presented to the press Monday evening. At the official presentation, he was accompanied by club president Joan Collet and by the sports director, Oscar Perarnau.
The first match for Espanyol with Gâlcă as coach will be played on Tuesday in the Spanish Cup against Levante.
Gâlcă replaces Sergio Gonzalez, who had taken over the team in 2014. The club is currently on the 12th place with 17 points in 15 matches, with one win in the last eight official games.
Gâlcă, 43, had played for Espanyol (1997-2001) but is also known at Mallorca, Villarreal, Zaragoza, Almeria. After retiring from football, Gâlcă coached the second team of Almeria (2009), then he coached the Under-17 national team of Romania (2013-2014). Last season, when he coached Steaua Bucharest, he won all the trophies possible: the championship, the Romanian Cup and the League Cup.
Gâlcă was named ‘Coach of 2015’ at the Romanian Football Gala.
