The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) announced on Thursday that German Christoph Daum is the new coach of the Romania national football team. The coach signed a contract valid for two years, the main objective being the qualification to the World Cup 2018.
Christoph Daum will have Rudi Verkempinck as deputy coach.
FRF’s proposal for the post of coach of Romania was approved by the Executive Committee. The appointment of the 62-year old technician was voted by all the eight members present at the meeting.
The sitting was attended by only eight of the 15 members of the Executive Committee. The decision will be challenged by those who boycotted the vote, arguing that Aurel Braşoveanu – the Liga 2 representative – was sentenced and is not allowed to occupy the post of administrator in football.
Florin Prunea, one of those absent, said he did not attend the sitting because FRF did not present the reasons for nominating Daum.
Christoph Daum: ‘I want to achieve the best performance’
“It is an honour and a responsibility to give my best for football in Romania. Work in football becomes more attractive when it is successful. Every effort we make brings us joy. I want to have success, to get the best results in every game, practice and discussion and qualify to the World Cup 2018. We need respect, rules and discipline. My concept about football is: we always attack, even if the ball is with the opponent. We always want to control the game, we want to have the initiative. If we lose the ball, we have to take it back. We need strong players physically, tactically and mentally, to give everything for Romanian football, to have the winning mentality. We will work on these qualities and we’ll lay stress on the character of players. (…) If we get totally involved, we’ll achieve everything. Each Romanian expects us to give everything for success. I want to achieve the best performance. Romanian football’s success on all levels matters the most. The basis of our cooperation will be mutual trust,” Daum said.
FRF President Răzvan Burleanu: We’ve brought an expert in ‘quick revivals’.
FRF President Răzvan Burleanu said Thursday evening, referring to the appointment of Christoph Daum in the position of coach, he hasn’t brought ‘a magician’ that will do wonders for the national team, but an expert in ‘quick revivals’.
Burleanu explained why he has chosen a foreign coach at the expense of a Romanian one: “A professional is a professional anywhere in the world. We need a foreign coach to reform the Romanian football, to rebuild it.”
