Dan Sucu Teams with Dedeman Owners & Bitdefender’s Talpeș for Genoa Deal

After the announcement that Dan Sucu became the owner of Genoa on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the sports mass media reported that the businessman had not been involved alone in this transaction.

Sucu, aged 61, who is also the main financier of Rapid would have convinced to join in the Genoa acquisition, according to some sources, the owners of Dedeman DYI retailer, brothers Dragoș and Adrian Pavăl to enter this business, as well as Bidefender co-founder and owner, Florin Talpeș, also recognized as the “king of IT”.
Dragoș Pavăl (58 years old) and Adrian Pavăl (56 years old) together have an estimated fortune of 3.3 billion dollars, approximately three billion euros, according to Forbes.
Brothers Dragoș and Adrian Pavăl, the founders of Dedeman, have managed to build an impressive fortune, which exceeds the value of the most famous Romanian tech entrepreneur, Daniel Dineș, CEO of UiPath.
According to data from 2023, the Pavăl brothers’ fortune amounts to approximately 3 billion euros, while Dineș, who in 2021 had an estimated fortune of 2.7 billion dollars, had a significant decrease in value, being now valued at 1.4 billion dollars, due to the collapse of UiPath shares. The Pavăl brothers are known in Romania for having transformed Dedeman into a true leader in the DIY market, managing to surpass multinationals such as Praktiker, OBI, Baumax or Leroy Merlin.
Their company managed to stay on the market and grow constantly, while many of its foreign competitors either withdrew or failed to establish themselves. Currently, Dedeman operates 62 stores in Romania and sells over 60,000 products, with an extensive online portfolio, which includes over 85,000 items.
The brothers hold minority stakes in several companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, including Alro (23.2%), Electrica (8.2%) and Transelectrica (6.48%). In 2022, the Pavăl brothers acquired 30% of Farmacia Tei and Bebe Tei, and through Pavăl Holding they also control a real estate portfolio estimated at 300 million euros. The transaction included the takeover of seven office buildings in Romania, with a total area of 165,000 square meters, previously acquired by the Austrian company CA Immo. The Pavăl brothers also hold minority stakes in Veranda Obor and Moldova Farming.
Italian media’s nickname for Sucu
The fact that Romanian tycoon, Moxexpert owner, Dan Sucu became a majority shareholder in Genoa came to the attention of the Italian press.
The Italians from Gazzetta dello Sport created a portrait of Dan Șucu, whom they called “the king of furniture in Romania”.
The prestigious Italian daily began the article with a reference to Dan Şucu’s wealth, far below that of other club owners in Serie A or other top championships. “Dan Şucu has a fortune of ‘only’ 300 million euros, but he received the bank’s approval”, headlined Gazzetta dello Sport. “The Romanian businessman, the king of furniture in Romania, made the deal of the century: 40 million euros to take over the club. Will he have enough money to support the team in the coming years?”, the Italians ask. “One thing is certain: Dan Şucu made the deal of the century. He became a club owner in Serie A with only 40 million euros from his own pocket, which was only possible because, at some point, Genoa had reached the edge of the abyss”, the Italians also noted.
