David Popovici won the European title in the 100 m freestyle for the second time in a row

David Popovici won, on Wednesday, the gold medal in the 100 m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Belgrade.

Popovici finished the race with a time of 46.88. just two hundredths away from the European record, which he has held since 2022, from Rome.

The world record (46 sec 80/100) has been held since February by the Chinese Zhanle Pan.

Second place went to Nandor Nemeth (Hungary), with a time of 47.49, and Serbian Andrej Barna finished third (47.66).

Two years ago, in Rome, David Popovici won the continental gold in the 100 m freestyle and the 200 m freestyle.

“Romanian wunderkind David Popovici underlined his credentials for Olympic gold in the men’s 100 metres freestyle as he claimed the European title on Wednesday,” Reuters says about Popovici.
