Davis Cup: Romania, defeated by Poland 3-2, fails to qualify to Europe-Africa Group I

Romania’s tennis team was defeated by Poland 3-2 on Sunday, in Cluj-Napoca, in the third round of the Davis Cup’s Europe-Africa Group II, although it led 2-1 after the doubles match.

Adrian Ungur was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Kamil Majchrzak in the decisive match.

In the fourth match, Hubert Hurkacz defeated Marius Copil 6-3, 6-4,

In the doubles match, the pair Florin Mergea/Horia Tecău defeated Lukasz Kubot/Marcin Matkowski 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Thus, Romania fails to promote to Europe-Africa Group I.

On Saturday, in the first match, Romania’s Marius Copil (27, 81st ATP) defeated Kamil Majchrzak (22, 187th ATP) 6-4, 6-2.

The second match of the Davis Cup play-off was won by Hubert Hurkacz (21, 95th ATP) against Adrian Ungur (33, 674th ATP) 7-6 (3), 7-5.

The two teams have played against each other five times, Poland leads 3-2.

In the first two round of the competition this year, Romania defeated Luxembourg 4-1 and Morocco 5-0.  Poland defeated Slovenia 3-2 and Zimbabwe 4-1.
