EURO 2016: UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Romania after the match against Albania

UEFA, the ruling body of European football, announced on Monday that it has opened disciplinary procedures against Romania, amid incidents caused by fans of the national team during Sunday’s match at EURO 2016 against Albania, lost by Romania 1-0.

Accusations against Romanian supporters refer to igniting torches in the stands and throwing objects on the pitch during the match in Lyon.

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) will be informed about possible sanctions from UEFA.

The Football Federation of Albania is also subject of disciplinary proceedings for incidents caused by fans during the last match of the group stage.

Romania’s football national team was defeated by Albania 1-0 at EURO 2016 on Sunday night and will exit the competition. It is the second football team that is out at EURO 2016 after Ukraine.

Albania scored in the 43rd minute when Armando Sadiku shot a historical goal, the first for Albania at a major tournament. Memushaj crossed on the right side, Chiriches was outflanked, Romanian goalkeeper Tatarusanu was uninspired and Sadiku headed the ball into the net.

Romania displayed the poorest performance at Euro 2016 and lost to Albania after 68 years.

For the Romanian coach, Anghel Iordanescu, it was the 100th match at the helm of the Romanian national team, but it was not a fortunate game for him.
