European Championship in Cluj: Four Romanian women gymnasts qualify to finals

Romanian gymnasts Catalina Ponor (photo), Larisa Iordache, Olivia Cimpian and Ioana Crisan have qualified to the women’s beam, floor and all-around finals of the European Individual Gymnastics Championships on Thursday, championship ongoing on in Cluj-Napoca.

Three-time Olympic gold-medallist Ponor initially finished 4th in the floor qualifications with 13.566 points, but the jury reviewed the score and awarded her 13.066 points, which got her out of the competition in the final. In the beam event she was awarded 14.066 points, coming in 4th.

Five-time European title winner Larisa Iordache finished the beam qualifications first as she got 14.566 for her routine, but she missed a spot in the uneven bars final because she ended 11th with 13.833 points.

Cimpian and Crisan, competing for the first time as seniors, advanced to the women’s all-around final from the 26th and the 29th positions, respectively, as they totalled 50.481 points and 50.199 points, respectively, Agerpres informs.

The 7th European Individual Artistic Gymnastics Championships are going on at the Polyvalent Hall in the Romanian north-western city of Cluj-Napoca, 60 years after Romania hosted the competition for the first time. 274 gymnasts compete, 168 in men’s events and 106 in women’s events, hailing from 37 countries.

Ten gymnasts are representing Romania at the championships in Cluj-Napoca: Olivia Cimpian, Ioana Crisan, Larisa Iordache and Catalina Ponor in the women’s events, as well as Marian Dragulescu, Cristian Bataga, Vlad Cotuna, Adelin Kotrong, Laurentiu Nistor and Andrei Ursache in the men’s events.

Romania’s only gymnast to have made it to the men’s apparatus finals is Marian Dragulescu, who on Wednesday advanced to the floor and vault finals.
