Romania’s Fed Cup tennis team has lost the confrontation against Germany on Sunday 4-1 and is to relegate to World Group II.
In the first match of the day Simona Halep was defeated by Angelique Kerber 2-6, 2-6 and in the second match Monica Niculescu (31st WT) lost to Andrea Petkovici (30th WTA) 6-0, 6-7 (1), 3-6 at the Polyvalent Hall of Cluj Napoca, in the confrontation for remaining in Fed Cup World Group.
Romania also lost the doubles match, as the pair Alexandra Dulgheru/Irina Begu was defeated by Annika Beck/Julia Goerges 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-10.
After losing the match, Halep said: “She played very good tennis, she has great confidence in herself. I player poorer. I didn’t have enough time to recover after the game on Saturday. I hit the ball too hard, maybe I should have mix the hits. I haven’t felt the match very good, she was more aggressive, she dominated the game.”
Halep added she felt pain in her ankle, but said she does not to find excuses for losing the match.
On Saturday Simona Halep (6th WTA) defeated Andreea Petkovici (30th WTA) 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4. In the first match of the confrontation Irina Camelia Begu (35th WTA) lost to Angelique Kerber (3rd WTA) 2-6, 3-6.
